Al Chet 12

Exploring the Al Chet Prayer
Rabbi Shraga Simmons

12. For the mistakes we committed before You while gathering to do negative things.
Engaging in evil as a lone individual is bad enough. But just as the secular courts treat "conspiracy" more seriously, so too God despises the institutionalizing of bad habits.

Ask yourself:
Am I part of a regular group that discusses negative things?
Did I participate in a gathering that led to negative activities?
Am I careful to associate only with moral and ethical people?

44 Roots of Mistakes
by George Brock

The Sin:  Mistakes done while gathering to do negative things.

  • Discussing negative things.
  • Preparing to do negative activities.
  • Associate with negative people.

The Battle:  Positive attitude {vs} Negative attitude.

The Cause:  Negative Attitude.

Attitude- is more important than facts, circumstances, failures, success and what other people- think, say or do.

The Victory:  At any given moment- we have a choice regarding the attitude we will embrace in that moment. We can not change the fact that people will act in a certain way or that we will go through tests and trials.

  • One is not defined by what happens to him, rather one is defined by how one reacts and responds to what happens to him.
  • One must focus on achieving the positive, not just try to avoid the negative.
  • One should search for the positive in everything. Not the negative.
  • Develop an “Attitude of Gratitude”. Focus on the positives. “Making the choice to change one's attitude- gives one the victory over a negative attitude”.

The Goal:  The goal is to stay focused on- “Making the world a better place”.

  • One must change one's focus in order to change one's results.
  • Negative thoughts produces Negative outcomes.
  • Positive thoughts produces Positive outcomes.
  • One needs to take control of one's life and change “one's negative attitude to a positive attitude”.

“If one would  sacrifice the (superficial) for the Essential. The (temporal) for the Permanent and the (particular) for the whole. One would then gain the victory over one's negative attitude and achieve a positive response to every situation. One must keep the faith and remember

  • Everything comes from G-d.
  • Everything is for your ultimate good.
  • Everything is for a purpose.

Thus every situation is a stepping stone to make a- “Better you”.
