Parshat Lech Lecha
God promises Avraham that he will be a blessing for all the families of the earth [1]. As a Noachide it had always been obvious to me that Israel had been just that. However, I remember back to when I was a child growing up in Church and they too had claimed that Avraham (and even Israel) had been a blessing to all the families of the earth. However, I also remember back to the days when I began searching into Judaism when many of my Christian friends scoffed at this idea: “How has Israel been a blessing,” and with that “How have they been a light to the nations?”
These two questions bothered me for sometime. It seemed obvious to me how this was true. It was difficult for me to understand how others could not see something that I thought to be so obvious, just like I did. This was something that I struggled with for a while.
Eventually I came to understand the difference in perspective and this helped me identify the mystery surrounding the blessing of Israel upon the peoples of the earth.
[1] Bereishit 12:3
